Let it Snow! The Snowman Contest Part I
Welcome!
While I await the arrival of a new camera battery charger to enable me to show pictures on the progression of my Rose Quilt, I have decided to make a concerted effort to make an entry in the Material Girls' February Snowman Contest!
As I understood it from the email I received from the shop, there really aren't any rules for this contest- only that entries must have a snowman in it! One is free to do almost anything they wish, including clothing and pillows in addition to quilts.
A few issues however.....
The entries must be in by the end of February. I am actually leaving next week for a conference in Portland, so that gives me pretty much this Sunday to get my act together and make something for the contest! A challenge, to be sure.
And yet, I feel particularly inspired about this exercise. I am not particularly attached to snowmen, but I like the idea of making art for a contest- reminds me of my high school days! For some reason, most of my artistic endeavors have taken place because of a contest. I guess I am just too competitive for my own good!!
So, I have decided to make a wall hanging, depicting a snowman with a musher's hat, carrot nose, and two long stick arms. He won't be alone in the snowy birch glade I plan to put him in however- he will be accompanied by two ravens on either arm, one I have imagined will be wearing a cozy scarf he "borrowed" from our little snowy friend. The title I want to give this piece is "Fairbanks Bird House."
The trick with this project, as I see it, is fabric selection. I originally imagined using nothing but batiks- in order to give it a painted feel. However, I am a grad student, and finding such fabrics for cheap prices is a very difficult task. So, either tonight or tomorrow, I will first delve into my massive scrap bucket to see if I can find some useful prints to use in a nature scene such as this. Hopefully I can borrow a camera to document on my next post my findings!
